For two days this week, we all stepped into the shoes of the Israelites. We went on a 'wilderness wandering' trip. We camped at Joshua Tree National Park. It was really pretty out there, but several of us agreed that if we had had to be out there for forty years, we would have complained every single day. Of course, we had a few more comforts, like camp stoves, and a supply of food and water, but it was still rough. After looking at pictures of the wilderness around where the Israelites would have been, and then comparing them to where we were, was incredible. The two places are so similar.
The entire trip was amazing. The first night it rained, and I realized how terrifying it must have been for the Israelites to hear god speaking to them from Mount Sinai. The thunder echoed off the rocks around us, making it really loud. When God spoke to the Israelites for the first time, he spoke in thunder, with the noise of trumpets. I can't get over how loud that must have been.
The second day, we did skits based on what we have read so far. They were all so funny, and I don't think any of us will ever read the Bible in the same way again. We'll always remember the funniest portrayals of Aaron, and Moses, Balaam, and even God. The best part is, we all know that God was laughing right along with us, because, after all, he did create laughter and humor.
